We Do What We Want
Orange Monkey Publishing, 2015
We Do What We Want by Ruben Rodriguez continues Orange Monkey Publishing’s exploration of the page. Experimental in design and content, this collection of short stories is Ruben Rodriguez’s debut chapbook. Its stories offer a lottery for moon inhabitation, commentary on race relations in America, a conversation amongst sunflowers, a look into the entrepreneurial ventures of bears, a trip to the Goodwill, and a psychological examination of a piñata’s final stand. While some of these stories appear in the familiar style of paragraphing, others splash onto the page in ways the author and publisher hope to be new and exciting. Printed in full color, the stories are accompanied by 4 paintings executed by the author. We Do What We Want is not only a declaration; it is a call to expand the nature of fiction while continuing to explore story and the wonders it entails.
